Most firewood comes from dense hardwoods like oak and hickory. That density is what gives them long, steady burn times. It also makes them slower to catch, which is exactly why you need kindling in the first place. Poplar is a native Wisconsin hardwood with lower density and a grain structure that makes it the best kindling wood for fireplaces, fire pits, and wood stoves.
