How to Buy

Buying Firewood by the Cord

Buying by the cord is how you stock up for a full season instead of a single evening. A full cord is 128 cubic feet of tightly stacked wood (4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet), and a face cord is one-third of that. It is the right way to buy when wood is your main heat source, when you burn most weekends, or when you simply want enough on hand that you are not topping up every few weeks. For a single fire or a weekend at the pit, our bundles are the easier grab.

Every cord we sell is kiln-dried to 15% moisture, and that number is the whole point. Green and air-seasoned wood often reads above 20% moisture, so it hisses, smokes, and struggles to light. Wood dried to 15% lights fast, burns hotter and cleaner, and lays down far less creosote in your chimney. It also comes to you free of the mold and insects that ride along on wood dried outdoors.

Picking a species comes down to how you burn. Reach for oak or hickory when heat and burn time matter most, the wood you want for a wood stove or a long winter fire. Choose cherry when the fire is the centerpiece, for its sweet aroma and easy cooking smoke, and birch when you want a bright flame that lights quickly. Mixed hardwood is the everyday all-rounder, and the value pick if you just want good wood on the rack. Open any species above to read the full burn profile before you order.

Common Questions

Kiln-Dried Firewood FAQ

We sell five kiln-dried hardwoods by the cord: oak, hickory, cherry, birch, and mixed hardwood. Every species is kiln-dried to 15% moisture at our New Berlin facility, USDA and WDATCP certified, and ready to burn on delivery. Browse each species above to compare burn characteristics and order the cord size you need.

It depends on how often you burn. Occasional fire-pit and fireplace users often get through a season on a face cord or two, while a primary wood-heat household can burn several full cords over a winter. A full cord is 128 cubic feet of stacked wood, and a face cord is one-third of that. If you are not sure, our guide on how much firewood is in a cord breaks down the math.

Green firewood is freshly cut and too wet to burn well. Seasoned firewood has air-dried over months but often still reads above 20% moisture. Kiln-dried firewood is dried in a controlled kiln to 15% moisture, so it lights faster, burns hotter and cleaner, and produces less smoke and creosote. Our guide to seasoned firewood explains the difference in detail.

Keep firewood off the ground on a rack, in a single row with room for air to move around it, and cover only the top so the sides can breathe. Because kiln-dried wood is already dry, storage is about keeping it dry, not drying it further. Our firewood storage guide covers rack placement, spacing, and covering.
