Why Kiln-Dried

Dry Kindling Lights. Wet Kindling Doesn't.

Most kindling sold at hardware stores and gas stations is naturally air-dried at best. At worst it has been sitting in a pallet through rain and humidity for weeks. Wet kindling smokes, smolders, and stalls your fire.

BBF kindling is run through the same kiln process as our firewood: 265°F for 24 to 32 hours, down to sub-15% moisture. It catches on the first match. Every time.

Why Poplar

Poplar is a native Wisconsin hardwood. It is lighter and thinner-splitting than oak or hickory, which makes it ideal for kindling. It lights faster than dense hardwoods without the resin and smoke of softwood kindling like pine.

How to Use

Kindling's Job in the Fire

Kindling bridges the gap between your fire starter and your main firewood. Tinder catches the flame. Kindling grows it into something large enough to ignite a split log.

01

Stack

Stack a handful of 8-inch poplar splits over your fire starter in a loose teepee or log cabin structure.

02

Light

Light the starter. The dry poplar catches quickly and grows the flame on its own.

03

Add a Log

Once the kindling is burning strong, add your first log. The whole process takes under two minutes with dry wood.

This kindling lights on the first match every single time. I used to fight with damp gas-station bundles that just smoked. One handful of this poplar and my fireplace is going in under two minutes. Grabbed three bags on pickup in New Berlin.

Added a couple bags to my firewood order and they came on the same delivery. The kindling is bone dry, splits are a perfect size for my wood stove, and there is zero junk or bark dust in the bag. Exactly what dry kindling should be.

I was surprised how light the bag was, then I read why. It is properly kiln-dried so it weighs less and catches instantly. One bag has lasted me a dozen fires this winter. Will be buying the 5-pack next time for the discount.

Questions, Answered Directly

Kindling Bag FAQ

Everything SE Wisconsin homeowners ask before ordering a bag of kindling. Don't see your question? Call (262) 746-7416.

Why does the bag feel lighter than I expected?

Because it's properly dry. Kiln-dried poplar at sub-15% moisture is noticeably lighter than air-dried or wet kindling at the same volume. We sell by the cubic foot for exactly this reason. A lighter bag means faster lighting, not less value.

What kind of wood is in the bag?

Poplar, a native Wisconsin hardwood. It splits thin, dries fast, and catches flame quickly. It burns hotter than softwood kindling without pine resin or excessive smoke.

How many fires will one bag start?

Roughly 8 to 15, depending on how much kindling you use per fire. A loose handful of 5 to 6 pieces is enough for a standard fireplace or fire pit start.

Can I add a kindling bag to my firewood order?

Yes. Add it to your cart alongside any firewood order and we deliver both at the same time. Browse firewood products.

How should I store the kindling between uses?

Inside or in a dry covered area. Kiln-dried wood re-absorbs moisture if left outside in rain. The bag itself is a reasonable short-term container, or transfer it to a small firewood rack or covered bin near your fireplace.
