We mapped the most-searched firewood species in all 50 states using Google Trends data, then cross-referenced each state’s top choice against published BTU heat output ratings.

Oak dominates 35+ states — and is the thermally correct choice at 26.4M BTU/cord.
Idaho & Montana search for pine above all else — 35% less heat per cord than oak.
New Mexico’s piñon pine preference is culturally and thermally defensible.
Alaska leads with birch — the smartest regional call given available species.
